Colin is in Shirley’s Garden who is an 83-year-old veggie and fruit growing expert gardener. Her backyard productive garden provides a feast for the taste buds and eyes, so Colin looks to see exactly how she does it.
The key to a successful productive garden is improve the soil to help encourage earthworms plus the beneficial soil microbes and bacteria. In this garden Shirley has transformed the space in her backyard and the results speak for themselves.
In this bed Shirley previously grew cauliflower during the winter months and now it has been harvested and the old plants removed and composted. So, it is important to now improve the soil before Colin plants another crop in its place.
The first step is to spread a good layer of compost or manure over the existing soil and the garden beds. The bags of compost make it so easy to apply.
Colin likes to add 2 to 3 handfuls of Richgro Blood and Bone Based Fertilizer per square metre. This organic based fertilizer is made from rich blood and bone boosted with phosphorous and potash to encourage tasty fruit and vegetables.
Colin is also using Richgro Black Marvel Compost which is a blend of fully composted organics to provide the soil and garden with a boost of natural organic nutrients to ensure strong and healthy plants and soil all year round. The combination of the compost and blood and bone provides a highly soluble boost to your plants resulting in bigger flowers, juicier fruit and better veggies, plus greener leaves and stronger roots.
For established plants use Richgro Black Marvel Compost as a mulch 50-100mm thick to improve the soil and encourage beneficial soil microbes and bacteria. To grow stronger and more flavoursome fruit and vegetables, you need to start from the ground up. And that means premium compost and blood and bone from Richgro.
